Self-Awareness is a Good Parenting Trait
ByYesterday I mentioned taking the Real Age quiz about my own health and lifestyle. I then filled out a questionnaire in regards to Abby’s health to see how I was doing in raising her. Not surprisingly, the areas where I tended to fall short were where she fell short as well. I think this is not only because I am in charge of a lot of these areas for her, but because she watches me and imitates much of what I do.
As I thought about it, it seems like our weaknesses are often manifested in our children not only in the area of health, but in the relational, spiritual and emotional arenas as well. Which means that one of the greatest ways we can parent our children is to know our own weaknesses. It we want to equip our children to live in a way that brings them happiness, then we need to see the obstacles that will keep them from that joy in life. So we must know our own hearts and our own struggles in order to help them with many of the same things they will face.

This is true in so many areas, and it is one that became glaring to me when looking at Kevin’s homeschooling. His mom’s academic weaknesses became his own, and it really opened my eyes to my need to be keenly aware so that I work on my own in order to help The Boy.
